Cuando Te Acuestes – Before You Go To Bed
English Version
Hi You! How the True Hot Mama doing? I feel like I didn’t finish explaining things last time we talked, so I’ll wrap it all up today with one big red bow, k? I just want you to know how simple it can be to do this with your family:
Make the things I’m commanding you today part of who you are. 7 Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you’re sitting together in your home and when you’re walking together down the road. Make them the last thing you talk about before you go to bed and the first thing you talk about the next morning. (Duet. 6:6)
Oh man! I almost forgot our coffee! Hold on! OK, with coffee in hand, NOW we can talk!
At home with our family, and from the time we were infants is where we should have learned to know God and to love Him. This is God’s design for our families.
And you know what? We never stop learning and growing!
It should be the most natural thing for us to talk about God with our kids and Handsome Man all the time and in every situation.
Whether watching a movie, reading a book, hearing a song at the mall, or watching something transpire in public, we always talk about it in light of the Word of God.
After breakfast, if I’m noticing a bit more fighting among the kids than usual, I would chat with them about strife, how it comes and how to deal with it Biblically. Or if I’ve been hearing a lot of complaining lately, I would talk about contentment and thankfulness.
These Bible moments change from day to day. We won’t always have 30 minutes to talk about stuff, you know? But even if it’s just reciting a favorite memory verse, or the definition of some character trait we’ve been working on, we aim at doing something every day. (Aim being the key word and not feeling guilty when it doesn’t happen. Remember, it took me 5 years to implement this!)
After dinner, when Daddy’s home, he reads a chapter from a book in the Bible we’ve been reading through and then we talk about it. We sometimes talk about world events or politics and help the kids understand it from a Biblical view. Sometimes he’ll read poetry that inspires us in the values we hold as a family.
Besides that, we take turns telling our low and high points of the day. This ensures good conversation and an opportunity to encourage one another.
This Bible time is a little longer than others throughout the day and we intentionally teach the kids to sit still and listen attentively as this will serve them the rest of their lives. We start with short periods of time and gradually extend them.
Now this isn’t only for families that have kids. It’s easier to start when kids haven’t arrived yet, but we’re creating a culture of taking time to worship as a family. I know several couples that do this and either don’t have kids yet, or their kids are grown and gone.
In fact, I know young people who don’t live at home anymore, but they keep up their Bible time around the dinner table with their roommates and friends. The important thing is that we be intentional in reading the Scriptures in our home with others so that we can continue to learn and grow in our relationship with God.
Whew! Now I feel like I explained it better! Next time we sit down to coffee, I can move on to another topic. So here’s a hug until the next time we meet!
