El Llamado A Ser Madre – The Noble Calling of Motherhood
¿O no?
Y tu… ¿Qué te has propuesto pensar de la Maternidad?
English Version
About 12 years ago, my positive pregnancy test lead to “how should we tell everyone the good news?” – and then the excitement began: Doctor’s visits & ultrasounds, picking out names, dreaming about baby’s future and all the things our family would do once baby comes. Such exciting times!
Sweet friend, I’m going to talk about this stage of life today because I have friends and family who are expecting or just had their first baby! It is such an amazing transition into a new dimension of life. And now… I’m going to serve your coffee the way I’ve been drinking it… Spanish style with a little condensed milk! Yummm!
Man! I had no idea how many decisions would have to be made! And then, bigger, more important ideas started filling our minds: How will we help this baby fulfill God’s plan for her life? What happens if we make mistakes… we know we’re not perfect! What a huge responsibility!
A new Mama (and Daddy) feels excited, anxious, and overwhelmed by the learning curb. There’s also the initial lack of sleep and all the energy that goes into making and then caring for a baby! Then there’s the realization that everyone has an opinion about how you should look, feel and do pretty much everything. What’s a Mama to do?
I realize some of my readers are Dads, and I´d love to write a future post about Fatherhood, but for today, I want to discuss what we should ALL believe about Motherhood.
We should highly value the role of motherhood because it is a High and Noble calling.
That’s right: God has called us to do it! And if He calls us to do something, He also gives us everything we need to fulfill that calling. What a relief! And don’t forget… His burden is light and easy.
Every one of us can enjoy and cherish motherhood.
You’ll be swimming upstream from Pop Culture with this kind of thinking! I’ve had to deliberately choose what I will believe about motherhood so I don’t get swept up by the general current of complaining, eye-rolling & “just wait till…”, as if motherhood is some kind of eternal purgatory. Here’s some areas I’ve focused on:
- God’s word is a sure foundation – He paints a picture of Motherhood with many examples of Mamas in the Bible. and the book of Proverbs is a parents’ handbook!
- Older, more experienced women teach younger women. Contrary to popular belief, these things do not come automatically. God designed us to learn & grow in community. So let’s seek out to share with less experienced, and to learn from the more experienced.
-
Titus 2:3-5 says, “Likewise, older women should be reverent in behavior, and not be false accusers, not be enslaved to much wine, but teachers of good things, that they may teach the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, and to be self-controlled, pure, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be dishonored.” (emphasis mine)
- God Himself leads us gently (Isaiah 40:11). He knows your every thought, question and desire – and He LOVES you. He will lead you and be with you every step of the way. Trust Him! Trust His design for you!
As a friend of mine once told me: “Motherhood is the toughest job you’ll ever love.” So, I’ve purposed to allow God’s thoughts about Motherhood to become my thoughts. And with His help, this is not an overwhelming, exhausting journey, but one that is True, Good and Beautiful.
What things have you purposed to believe about motherhood?
