Guarda Su Corazón – Keep Their Heart
¡Oraleeeee!
English Version
Whatzup, Yo? Like, what’s goin’ down?
OK, so do you remember some of the phrases we used as teens? Where did we pick those up? Let’s just say I didn’t get these from my parents. This was a stage of life when I started spending more time with friends…
But Mom had my heart.
Once upon a time, when my school buddies were thinking about possibly skippin’ school (super boring activities that day!) in order to go support our Volley Ball team, I literally ran to Mom’s work to ask her if I could go with them. “Whaaaat? You asked your MOM if you could skip school?”
Yup. Mom had my heart.
Our kids will spend a lot of time with other people… babysitters, teachers, friends, also grandmas, aunties… and their friends. So it’s extremely important that we have our kids’ hearts and that we know how to keep them! Others unwittingly will compete with us, but we must be keenly aware that what’s at stake is their heart.
“What Mom & Dad don’t know won’t hurt them” is a dangerous saying. “Come here honey, let me give you a candy to distract you from the fit you’re pitching, but don’t tell Mama, or we’ll both be in big trouble!” Again, this may be innocently done, but this attitude divides children from their parents and teaches them that it’s OK to disobey as long as Mom and Dad don’t find out.
If this is the case with someone that spends a lot of time with your kids, a kind explanation of how important it is for them to be on board with your teachings regarding your God-given authority is in your future. And from the time they’re really little, explain to your kids that true obedience is obeying Mom and Dad whether they are there or not.
“You’re a little overboard on this, don’t you think Celina?” Well… let’s remember that we’re forming certain attitudes and belief systems in our kids at a very young age which will determine how they make decisions the rest of their life!
What starts out as a 3 year-old sneaking a candy, without instruction and correction from us, will result in serious sneakiness when they’re older! Sneaking off with the boyfriend is not something I want to be dealing with in 10 years! But it is the same root issue.
So… once we’ve got our child’s heart, let’s know how to keep it and guard it.
Let’s be the No. 1 influence in the formation of our child’s spirit, soul and body, so that when they grow into those pre-teen and teen years and are exposed to so many other voices, they’ll know how to discern the truth AND have an open friendship with us so they can discuss any new ideologies that come up.
And just in case you were wondering… I did get to skip school that day! Excellent!
Peace Out!
