Preguntaste y Te Respondemos: El Halloween – You Asked, We Answer: Halloween
Se nos ha preguntado si celebramos Halloween.
¿Sabes?
English Version
We have been asked in different ways, on different occasions: Do you celebrate Halloween?
I think every family should thoughtfully craft their celebrations because they reflect our beliefs.
If by Halloween you mean: Trick-or-treating, Fear (Spooky costumes), Death (gruesome games and decorations / costumes), & Evil (I’m sure you’ve heard what “Trick or Treat” actually means), then the answer is: NO!
Why would I celebrate or dabble in everything Jesus redeemed me from?
Trust me, we’ve helped people who have dabbled in all of this and it is NO GAME. They’ve opened the door to these things only to realize it took them farther than they ever expected and made them pay a high price.
And yet, God is so loving, He has helped them, set them free and restored them. Isn’t He awesome?
But…back to “Do you celebrate Halloween?”
If you mean dressing up in non-scary, non-gruesome outfits, and going to our local Fall Festival where the children play games and get candy, YES.
To most 3-8 year-olds in the U.S. and Canada, Halloween spells C-A-N-D-Y and D-R-E-S-S-U-P and F-U-N!
So, we have taken these key elements and crafted a fun time where we play and enjoy life together.
We don’t want to take something away from our kids without replacing it with something great and meaningful.
On a side note, did you know Oct. 31st is the Anniversary of Martin Luther’s starting the Reformation? We celebrate and remember “By Grace Alone, Through Faith Alone in Christ Alone”. We take this time and teach our kids about the 95 Thesis nailed to that fateful church door and why it changed history!
Our kids know we don’t “Celebrate Halloween”.
But we also know that when a well-meaning stranger at the store asks the kids “are you ready for Halloween?” they’re simply asking if the kids have an outfit picked out and are they ready for some candy?
Grace and Peace.
We don’t have to correct everyone around us. We just get to love on people and point them to Christ. And when friends ask about Halloween, what more can we say? This post is our answer. 🙂
In our celebrations, let’s reflect our belief in the love of God, His grace and peace toward mankind, and the freedom to enjoy life with our family.
Your turn: How does your family do this?
