¡Yey! ¡Le toca a mi hermano! – Yay! It’s Brother’s Turn!
English Version
How does a 2 year-old (Courage) learn to share? Is it even possible? Maybe with a few tears…
Hi again! It’s so good to see you True Hot Mamas and Handsome Men around here! Care to join me with some Hot Chocolate?
Let me tell you… there’s a new rocking horse at our house. Courage, my 2-year-old, loves it and took a 30 minute turn… that’s a looooong time for a 2-year-old! When he got tired of it, big brother (Caleb) hopped on it for a turn and little brother didn’t like it one bit.
He fussed and cried and screamed “MY TURN!”. This is normal selfishness in all of us at this stage, and I would call this the right time to teach how to live for others.
So… I told little brother that we’re happy when big brother gets a turn. I literally clapped my hands and exclaimed in the happiest tone of voice I could muster “Yay! Brother gets a turn!!!” (I might have even hopped up and down a bit!)
Well, I enlisted big brother’s help. As he rode the horse, I got him to excitedly say: “Thank you for my turn! This is so fun!” And then 3 min. later when Caleb was done, he went and called Courage with… “It’s your turn! Have fun!”
What happened next? Courage took a 3 min. turn and climbed off on his own, and went a-huntin’ for his brother to make sure he knew it was HIS turn now.
Success!
It IS possible to teach a 2-year-old how to share happily.
This is the first of probably a dozen such episodes in the next 2 weeks, but after that, experience has taught me that it will start to improve dramatically.
Hang in there, Mama & Daddy! If you’ll just stick to it, you will see results! And you will give your child the most precious gift only you can give him at such a tender age: Self-control.
He will be able to self-govern when at 10 years old he runs into another situation, and when he’s 18 and is presented with the evils of this world, and when he’s married, to go to work with love for his family even when he doesn’t feel like it.
How about you? How do you teach your kids to share? Please leave a comment!
